Aquarium Moving Service: Prices, Crew and Setup

Calculate aquarium moving bills from published crew rates and minimums, then check livestock handling, travel time, equipment setup and loss coverage.

Moving an aquarium is more than moving a glass box. Fish, filter media, substrate, plumbing, lights and the stand all have to reach a destination where the setup can run again. A household moving quote that excludes live animals may cover only the empty tank and cabinet, leaving the most time-sensitive work to someone else.

The published examples below show how crew rates, minimums and trip fees become a bill. They are October 2026 checks of named providers in different cities, not a national aquarium-moving average. The accepted estimate should define the tank size, access route and who handles every stage of the live system.

Key figures

  • $380 A to B Movers two-person minimum bill
  • $490 A to B Movers three-person minimum bill
  • $660 A to B Movers four-person minimum bill

A minimum can set the bill before travel begins

Aquatic World publishes $175 per hour for a two-person aquarium-moving crew and a four-hour minimum. Its clock runs from arrival at the first location until departure from the new location. Four hours produce $700; five produce $875 and six $1,050, before any separate charges.

The page says this rate applies to tanks up to 55 gallons, then directs tanks 55 gallons and up to ask for an estimate. Because those statements overlap at 55 gallons, confirm the quote for that size rather than deciding which sentence overrides the other.

A to B Movers’ Phoenix-area aquarium page lists these crew choices with a two-hour minimum and a separate dispatch charge.

These two businesses are not competing quotes for one address. A lower minimum in Phoenix does not establish that a Chicago move can be bought for $380. Use each example to spot the billing structure rather than treating the table as interchangeable national offers.

Crew size changes both time and the minimum charge

For the Phoenix two-person rate, three billed hours plus the $160 trip charge produce $490. A three-person crew for two hours also produces $490. That equality does not prove the larger crew completes the same aquarium job one hour faster; it simply shows a comparison worth asking about in the estimate.

Ask which crew is needed for the empty tank, stand and access route. Doorways, turns, stairs, elevators and long carries can change handling time. Photos of both addresses and the glass dimensions help more than describing the aquarium only by its gallon label.

Record any access reservation, parking permit or loading-window cost. A building elevator available for a short period can make a delay expensive. State whether waiting, packing, draining, travel, refill and cleanup all count as billable time, and which can be completed before arrival without risking the fish or equipment.

The aquarium stand guide explains why the destination base should be ready before the tank arrives. A stand that fits through the door but cannot support the filled aquarium does not complete the move.

Livestock transport and equipment handling need named owners

Ask whether the provider transports live fish, plants and any invertebrates, or only the empty hardware. The plan should identify holding containers, temperature and oxygen support, transport duration and the person responsible for restarting the system. Do not let “aquarium move” conceal a live-animal exclusion.

Filter media is part of the biological system rather than ordinary dry packing material. University of Florida IFAS Extension describes nitrification as an oxygen-requiring bacterial process. Its guidance places a new biofilter’s establishment at six to eight weeks; a household should not assume that buying a replacement filter instantly reproduces an established aquarium’s capacity.

The nitrogen-cycle guide explains why moving all the glass successfully does not prove water quality is stable. Agree on what happens to existing media and how the tank is checked after setup. That care discussion should be held before moving day, not after fish are waiting in transport containers.

Livestock-handling tools are a separate part of the move from lifting an empty tank. Agree on who supplies containers, equipment and aquatic-care support.

Do not move a filled aquarium on the assumption that keeping all the water makes it safer. Follow the tank manufacturer’s handling instructions and the specialist’s draining plan. Water and substrate add load; the tank’s support requirements and glass seams remain relevant even for a short move across the room.

Damage terms do not automatically cover fish losses

Aquatic World’s policy states that hardware is guaranteed to remain in the operating condition it had on arrival, but livestock is not guaranteed because of stress and environmental conditions. Ask any provider to explain equipment damage and animal-loss terms separately.

Inventory the equipment with photographs and note existing cracks, leaks or control faults. Record the declared value of the tank, cabinet and accessories if a valuation or insurance option is offered. Do not assume a rate described per pound provides full replacement value for a costly glass aquarium.

For a purely hypothetical coverage example, an agreed limit of $200 against a $900 replacement would leave a $700 difference. Those numbers illustrate the question to ask; they are not statutory limits or a policy offered by either provider. Read the accepted terms and confirm exclusions before arranging coverage.

The care plan travels with the fish

Arrange the transport and restart plan with an aquarium specialist, and consult an aquatic veterinarian when fish health makes the move more complex. A cheap hardware quote is not a substitute for a plan that maintains the animals’ conditions during the interruption.

Restarting the aquarium is part of completing the job

The new location should have a suitable electrical supply, a level compatible stand and access to prepared replacement water. Check whether plumbing connections, leak testing, temperature checks and filter operation are included in the moving estimate or billed as a separate installation.

The aquarium placement guide covers location decisions that are harder to fix once the tank is filled. A move is a good time to resolve clearance behind filters, access for maintenance and the route for water changes, but optional upgrades should be priced separately.

If the new home cannot accommodate the aquarium, arrange responsible rehoming rather than release. The guide to unwanted aquarium fish covers that decision; transporting livestock to a new keeper is a different plan from abandoning it outdoors.

As a worksheet, start with Chicago’s published four-hour minimum of $700. Add hypothetical $40 parking and $60 containers or water supplies only if those charges are outside the quote; the illustration becomes $800 before any further charges. If the move takes five billed hours, the same assumed extras produce $975.

After setup, retain the equipment inventory, visit record and water-test observations. Define who responds if a leak, temperature fault or water-quality concern appears later. The transport invoice should be reconciled against the accepted estimate, while any new equipment belongs in the ongoing aquarium budget rather than being silently attributed to labor.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum aquarium-moving bill?

It depends on the provider. Chicago's Aquatic World publishes four hours at $175 per two-person crew, or $700 before extras. The Phoenix two-person example is two hours at $110 plus a $160 trip charge, or $380.

Are live fish included in a tank-moving quote?

Do not assume so. Specify livestock, filter media, transport containers, temperature and oxygen support, and setup at the destination. Some movers may handle only empty hardware.

Does a larger crew always cost more overall?

A larger hourly rate can be offset by less time, but that saving needs an estimate. The Phoenix examples give $490 for two movers over three hours or three movers over two hours, including the same trip charge.

Are fish guaranteed to survive a professional move?

No universal guarantee follows from hiring movers. Aquatic World explicitly excludes a livestock guarantee. Review animal-loss terms separately from equipment damage and agree on the care plan before booking.
