Microchipping costs can include the implanted device, the clinic appointment and enrollment in a registry. A low advertised implantation fee does not tell the reader whether enrollment is already included. Conversely, paying another registry when an enrollment is prepaid can add spending without answering which record a finder will use.
This guide uses a veterinary hospital’s own service prices and AKC Reunite’s published enrollment offer checked in October 2026. The combined totals are conditional examples, not a bundled quote from either business. They explain the questions to ask before paying and the record to check after implantation.
Key figures
- $53.00 Hamilton Plaza microchip implantation, starting price
- $22.95 Separate AKC Reunite lifetime online enrollment
- $143.95 Example: implant, exam and separate lifetime enrollment
Implantation and enrollment are separate bill items
Hamilton Plaza Animal Hospital lists microchipping from $53. Its general exam starts at $68, but the separate listing does not establish that every microchip appointment requires both charges. Ask whether the quoted chip service includes the device, implantation, enrollment and an exam.
AKC Reunite’s current enrollment banner lists $22.95 for online lifetime enrollment and says there is no annual fee. It lists prepaid enrollment as free. An adoption, breeder or clinic arrangement may supply prepaid enrollment, so check the documents before paying the individual online fee.
| Conditional cost example | Calculation | Subtotal |
|---|---|---|
| Implant only, other items already included or not charged | Published starting implantation fee | $53.00 |
| Implant plus separate online enrollment | $53 + $22.95 | $75.95 |
| Implant plus separately charged exam | $53 + $68 | $121.00 |
| Implant, exam and separate online enrollment | $53 + $68 + $22.95 | $143.95 |
| Existing chip with valid prepaid enrollment | No new implant; prepaid enrollment fee | $0 for enrollment |

Confirm inclusions before adding a registry or exam fee; the zero-dollar row does not promise that every clinic visit or ownership transfer is free.

The difference between the $75.95 and $143.95 examples is the $68 exam, not a more expensive chip. If the dog is already attending a booked appointment, ask how adding the chip changes that bill rather than assuming another full exam is automatically charged.
The first-year dog budget puts identification beside adoption, equipment and other initial costs. Keep a record of what the adoption fee includes so a device or enrollment already supplied is not purchased twice.
The price page has an older conflicting figure
AKC Reunite’s current offer banner says $22.95, but older portions of the checked homepage still contain $19.50 wording. This guide uses the current enrollment banner’s $22.95 instead of presenting the older amount as the live fee. The difference is $3.45, enough to identify which statement a quote is following.
Before paying, confirm the total displayed for the selected enrollment and any optional add-ons. A homepage contains several offers and historical text; the checkout for the chosen service should resolve the payable fee. No personal chip number or owner record was entered to produce the examples here.
Separate optional alert products or other services from the base registry enrollment. A recurring charge for an extra product is not evidence that the advertised lifetime enrollment has become an annual subscription. Ask which service the recurring payment buys and whether the base record remains enrolled without it.
For a household with two unregistered, already implanted dogs, two $22.95 enrollments would total $45.90 if neither is prepaid and the same individual rate applies. That calculation is not a claim that a multiple-pet offer uses the same fee; compare any available household arrangement before paying.
A scan answers a different question from enrollment
An implanted chip transmits an identification number when read by a scanner. The veterinary association’s brochure explains that it does not hold the owner’s address and is not GPS tracking. The contact information is kept in an external registry record linked to the number.
For a newly adopted dog, ask the clinic or shelter to scan and record the existing number before arranging another implantation. A found chip can already be connected to a registry and previous ownership record. The next task may be checking or transferring that record rather than buying another device.
Save the chip number, registry name and enrollment confirmation with the dog’s documents. A clinic invoice saying “microchip” proves a charged service, but it does not by itself show that an owner record was submitted and confirmed. Resolve that distinction while the clinic or adoption organization can supply the paperwork.
The boarding cost guide covers a setting where emergency contacts and identification documents are often discussed. A boarding form’s contact details do not automatically update the microchip registry; check each record separately when a number changes.
Registration maintenance usually means updating a record
The AVMA brochure recommends keeping enrollment contacts current and asking for a chip scan at least annually. An update after a move or phone change is more important than assuming an old enrollment confirmation still connects a finder to the household. Verify that the primary contact is reachable and that any alternate contact has agreed to help.
For AKC Reunite’s advertised lifetime enrollment, this guide does not add an assumed annual registration payment. Five years at an invented $20 renewal would add $100 to the budget, but that would describe a fee the cited offer does not charge. Use the registry’s terms rather than copying subscription assumptions from a tracking product.
That distinction also matters at a routine visit: scanning an existing chip is different from implanting another one. Ask whether the scan is included in the visit or separately billed. The published $53 implantation starting price should not be treated as the cost of every future check.
Have implantation and scan questions handled by the veterinary team, and confirm the registry record with its enrollment service. A microchip does not replace a collar tag, prevent escape or guarantee reunion after a dog is lost.
The best quote identifies the work already done
Before booking, collect the adoption papers and any enrollment confirmation. Ask which chip is present, whether enrollment is prepaid, whether ownership transfer is needed and whether an exam is included. These questions target duplicate spending without assuming every prior owner completed the record correctly.
If another veterinary procedure is planned, ask how microchipping could be billed during that visit. The neutering decision guide addresses timing considerations, while the appointment estimate answers the price question. Do not delay a needed identification plan solely because a future appointment might combine fees.
Afterward, retain the invoice and registry confirmation together. They document separate parts of the task: the clinic’s work and the owner contact record. The lowest sensible total is the price of the missing work, not the price of repeating services that are already in place.
Questions people ask
How much is microchipping in the published clinic example?
Implantation starts at $53. A separately listed exam starts at $68, but ask whether the appointment requires that charge and whether enrollment is included.
Does AKC Reunite charge annually for base enrollment?
Its checked current offer advertises $22.95 online lifetime enrollment with no annual fee, and prepaid enrollment is listed as free. Optional services and transfer terms should be checked separately.
Why does the guide use $22.95 rather than $19.50?
The checked homepage contains older $19.50 wording as well as a current $22.95 enrollment banner. The guide follows the current banner and recommends confirming the selected checkout total.
Can the chip tell where a lost dog is?
No. A scanner reads its identification number, which is linked to contacts in a registry. Keep those contacts current and ask the veterinary team to scan the chip during routine care.
