Cat boarding and home sitting use different units. A boarding quote is usually per night, a drop-in quote is per visit, and an overnight sitter quote covers another service again. A lower advertised number does not identify the lower trip total until dates, frequency and care responsibilities are included.
The examples below are published U.S. provider prices checked in October 2026. The providers operate in different places, so this is a demonstration of billing differences, not a nationwide price range or a side-by-side quote for one address. Ask local providers for the same dates and care plan before deciding.

Hamilton Plaza says regular cat boarding includes hospital food, bedding and condominium-style accommodation in a separate area away from dogs. Its $50 medical category applies to a cat requiring medications or other special care. That is a different care category, not simply an upgraded room.
Gotham’s drop-ins include feeding, fresh water, litter scooping and time with the cat. A sleepover is described as staying overnight and leaving in the morning. None of those descriptions establishes continuous care for all 24 hours of a day.
Visit frequency changes a home-care total quickly
At the posted $32 rate, one 30-minute visit daily over seven days gives a $224 base total. Two daily visits produce 14 visits and a $448 base total. The doubled bill buys a second visit, rather than the same service at an unnecessarily higher price.
The visit schedule should follow the cat’s care plan and the provider’s capabilities. Do not reduce medication or observation frequency solely to make home sitting win a spreadsheet comparison. Likewise, a boarding rate does not prove that staff will monitor every hour of the night; ask about staffing and access to care.
Use the adult cat budget to record the trip expense separately from monthly food and litter. A cat’s existing supplies do not pay a sitter’s time, and a free automatic feeder does not cover fresh water, litter checks or observation during an absence.
Arrival and return days can add visits even when the trip contains seven nights. Give the provider the departure time and expected return time, not just the flight dates. Ask who covers the cat if the return is delayed.
Medication, taxes and access create additional lines
Bridgeport posts a $5 charge per medication administration. At two administrations daily for seven days, that line adds $70 to its $245 seven-night base, producing $315 before other charges. This is a calculation using the posted fee and an assumed schedule, not a prescribed dosing frequency.
Gotham lists standard medication treatment at $8 per treatment and says administration depends on the cat’s cooperation. It also lists care for up to two cats within the visit price and $5 per additional cat. Keep the number of cats and the required tasks in the request so the provider can confirm the quote.
Gotham’s page states New York sales tax of 8.875% applies to services. A $224 base would therefore become $243.88 after that tax alone. Weekend and holiday extras may also apply. Its key pickup section currently displays both $20 and $15 per trip, so obtain the access fee directly rather than selecting the cheaper conflicting figure.
Boarding eligibility can require spending before arrival
Bridgeport’s published rules include current required vaccines, specified cat testing and a negative fecal result within the last six months. Those are that facility’s admission rules, not a universal vaccination schedule for every cat or every boarding business.
Send existing records before booking and ask the provider what it accepts. A previously completed test or vaccine might meet the facility’s rule, or the facility may request newer documentation. An examination or new testing can create spending outside the room rate.
The cat carrier guide covers the transport equipment. Add transport time and any pickup charge to the trip comparison. Home sitting avoids taking the cat to a facility, but may require a key handoff, alarm instructions or a paid introductory meeting.
Gotham posts a $32 introductory meeting fee that is deducted from the booking total if service proceeds. If the customer decides against proceeding, the fee is retained. Counting both the full credited meeting fee and the full final booking would double-count it when the stated credit applies.
Care coverage and cancellation terms belong in the decision
Before paying, identify the named caregiver, backup, emergency contact and authority to obtain veterinary care. Keep feeding instructions and relevant records in a place the provider can access. Confirm how a missing cat, an inaccessible home or a missed visit is handled.
Discuss medical or medication-related care with the veterinarian and ask the provider which tasks it can deliver reliably. A cheaper booking is not equivalent if it cannot supply the needed observation, medication timing or emergency response.
Cancellation policies can make a reservation more expensive than the nights or visits ultimately used. Gotham says an early return does not generate a refund for unused booked visits, and its page contains separate standard and major-holiday cancellation rules. Read the terms before paying, especially where deadlines or overlapping charges need clarification.
The automatic feeder guide shows why timed food delivery is only part of home care. Include the equipment in the instructions if a sitter will use it, but retain a feeding fallback in case it jams or loses power.
Compare two local totals only after both providers confirm the dates, care tasks, tax, extras and cancellation terms. A week of boarding, seven drop-ins and fourteen drop-ins can all have defensible prices while covering different time and responsibilities.
Questions people ask
Is a cat sitter cheaper than boarding?
It depends on local rates and visit frequency. In the named examples, seven $31 boarding nights cost $217 and seven $32 drop-ins cost $224 before extras. Fourteen drop-ins cost $448 and cover a different schedule.
How much is a week of cat boarding?
Published examples are $217 for seven regular nights at Hamilton Plaza and $245 at Bridgeport, before extras. These are named local prices, not national averages or medical-care quotes.
Are medications included in boarding?
Policies vary. Hamilton Plaza posts a separate $50 medical cat-boarding category. Bridgeport posts $5 per administration. Ask the provider to classify the care and quote the proposed schedule.
Does overnight sitting mean 24-hour supervision?
Not necessarily. Gotham describes a sleepover as overnight care followed by leaving in the morning. Confirm daytime visits, gaps and the emergency response plan separately.
